Treatment of baking tins and trays

Some precautions must be taken to ensure the performance of non-stick coatings.

Cleaning the surfaces

The materials treated are generally ordinary or stainless steel, aluminum or light alloys.

For new materials, the most satisfactory method is to degrease the metal with white spirit, trichloroethane, trichloroethylene or perchloroethylene (by dipping or in vapor phase), followed if possible by careful sandblasting, except in the case of aluminum.

Concerning materials that need reconditioning, we recommend to remove the silicone coating either by pyrolysis or by soaking in concentrated sulfuric acid.

In the latter case, rinse thoroughly after the treatment and dry.

Application of Primers

In the case of large flat surfaces such as steel or aluminum trays and their perforated versions, a thin coat of primer (approx. 1 to 3 µm) should be applied.

The primer improves the adhesion of the then applied Silbione rubber layer.

Do not apply too much primer, as the adhesion will then suffer.

Please consult us concerning suitable primers.

In the case of steel mesh trays no primer is required if the Silbione rubber is applied so that it surrounds the steel mesh. To achieve this we strongly recommend to spray the Silbione CAF's on both sides of the mesh.

Prior to the application

SILBIONE DISPERSION CAF 71500G must be homogenized before use with a stirrer or drum roller. Once homogenized, the dispersion is ready to use and does not require further dilution.

If the product is transferred into an intermediate tank we recommend the use of an internal stirrer to ensure that the airless spray gun is fed with homogenized product.

Always protect the SILBIONE DISPERSION CAF 71500G from moisture during storage and handling.

Applying a single-layer coating

The coating is preferably applied using an AIRLESS type spray system.

For easy application SILBIONE CAF 72576 or SILBIONE CAF DISPERSIONS 71550, or 71528 should be diluted with aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g. anhydrous cyclohexane).

SILBIONE CAF 72576 should be diluted to a dry matter content of approximately 70 %.

This is achieved by adding approximately 430 g of the chosen solvent to 1 kg of SILBIONE CAF 72576 under continuous stirring.

SILBIONE CAF DISPERSIONS 71550 or 71528 should be diluted to a dry matter content of approximately 50 %.

This is achieved by adding approximately 400 g of the chosen solvent to 1 kg of SILBIONE DISPERSIONS 71550 or 71528 under continuous stirring.

SILBIONE DISPERSION CAF 71500G is ready to use. Due to the low viscosity homogenization is necessary before use.

We recommend the application of a layer of approx. 80 µm thickness.

The coating should be left to dry for about 24 hours (23°C / 50% humidity).

The product may then still release some fumes upon its first pass in the oven at high temperatures.

In order to suppress this phenomenon we recommend to dry after the application of the coating at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours before heating in an oven to 200°C during
30 minutes.

The oven must be ventilated (extraction) and must have protected heating resistances.

The coatings give excellent release properties.

Applying a two-layer coating

To further increase release performance and most of all durability, we recommend the application of a two-layer coating.

This is particularly recommended for toast and soft bread appliances.

The tray preparation is the same as mentioned above.

General

The layers of the coating are preferably applied using an AIRLESS type spray system.

For easy application SILBIONE CAF 72576 or SILBIONE CAF DISPERSIONS 71550 or 71528 should be diluted with aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons (e.g. anhydrous cyclohexane).

The two layer coating

We recommend the application of a first layer (40 – 50 µm) of SILBIONE CAF DISPERSION 71550, 71528 or 71500G (tie coat). This assures excellent grease resistance and long term Silbione rubber adhesion to the tray surface.

Then a layer (40 – 50 µm) of SILBIONE CAF 72576 (topcoat) should be applied. This assures excellent release properties, especially in the case of toast or soft bread release applications.

As the appearance of the two red SILBIONE rubbers is slightly different, it is possible to distinguish the two layers.

If an even better distinction is wanted the black SILBIONE CAF DISPERSION 71528 or the grey SILBIONE DISPERSION 71500G should be used as tie coat.

Both layers should be applied with an AIRLESS spray gun. The overall thickness should be approximately 80 – 100 µm.

The first layer should be allowed to dry for 15 to 30 minutes at ambient temperature before applying the second layer.

If the second layer is applied too early, the CAF products may mix and the performance advantage of the two-layer system is diminished.

If the second layer is applied too late, the interlayer adhesion may not be optimal.

Final curing

The coating should be left to dry for about 24 hours (23°C / 50% humidity).

In this case, the product may release some fumes upon its first pass in the ovens at high temperatures.

The performance advantage

With the two-layer system the service life of the coating may be doubled (e.g. 6 months => 12 months) in certain cases.

SILBIONE DISPERSION CAF 71500 GRY

The SILBIONE DISPERSIONS CAF 71550 (red), 71528 (black), 71500G (grey) and the SILBIONE CAF 72576 (red) are one component silicone rubbers crosslinking at room temperature by reacting with the moisture in the air.

These SILBIONE products contain reactive polydimethylsiloxane oils and inert fillers.

The SILBIONE DISPERSIONS CAF 71550 and 71528 are supplied as cyclohexane dispersions (70% solids).

The SILBIONE DISPERSION CAF 71500G is supplied as cyclohexane dispersions (50% solids).

The SILBIONE CAF 72576 is a 100% solids product.

They can be used separately as non-stick coatings for materials in contact with foodstuffs.

They can also be used in these applications in the form of a two-layer system which boosts their performance.

The product obtained after crosslinking only contains substances that are in conformity with a number of Food Contact legislations. Contact BS for more detailed information.

Important remarks: Manufacturers of paints, varnishes or coatings must naturally make sure that the other constituents in their formulas (solvents, pigments, additives, etc.) also comply with the regulations. They must also check that the coating obtained have been correctly applied, in particular to avoid any risk of migration of constituents.
