Bluestar Silicones becomes Elkem Silicones
Ten years ago Bluestar Silicones was born after China National Bluestar Corporation acquired Rhodia Silicones. Bluestar Silicones was established in February 2007 after the purchase of the silicone branch of Rhodia by ChemChina. ChemChina is the largest group in China's chemical industry, active in six major sectors like advanced chemical materials and specialty chemicals, basic chemicals, oil processing, agrochemicals, tire and rubber products and chemical equipment.
1. Rhodia's Global Silicone Business becomes Bluestar Silicones
Bluestar Silicones was formed after China National Bluestar Corporation acquired Rhodia Silicones. The acquisition of Rhodia's global silicones business by China National Bluestar Corporation, was finalized on January 31, 2007, creating a new $700 million silicones-focused company called Bluestar Silicones. The acquisition involves all silicone-related business activities, products, employees and manufacturing assets. Bluestar Silicones combines Bluestar Corporation's upstream Silicon metal operations and capacity with Rhodia's downstream silicone market and applications expertise. With downstream production units throughout the world, Bluestar Silicones has leading positions in key markets such as specialty elastomers, paper and textile coatings, dental and health care applications.
2. Bluestar Silicones, Delivering your potential
Bluestar Silicones was established on February, 1st 2007 after the purchase of the silicone branch of Rhodia by ChemChina. Bluestar Silicones has over 60 years of expertise in the field of silicones, Bluestar Silicones has developed a proactive policy in terms of agile innovation. Since 1944, Bluestar Silicones has continuously sought to develop new technologies, new processes and new solutions to address our customers' needs. The Sino-French collaboration has successfully energized this silicon activity, driven by high growth and very demanding markets in terms of investments in the industry, R&D, or operational excellence. The French expertise brought its technology and knowledge of specialty activities, and built production bases in Europe. The Chinese expertise brought its capability of power production and manufacturing, long term industrial vision and global growth strategy in China, laying a good foundation for the win-win integration. Over the past decade, Bluestar Silicones has become a silicone manufacturer whose yearly sales amount to €525 million worldwide, offering a comprehensive range of silicone products in support of diverse specialty markets, including paper release, textile coatings, healthcare, mold making, automotive, aerospace, and personal care. Bluestar Silicones has invested tens of millions of euros every year in the industrial facilities, especially in France and China, created and preserved qualified jobs, and strengthened the R&D, providing an inexhaustible driving force in its sustainable development. In order to improve the productivity and quality of elastomers, Bluestar Silicones invested 15 million euros in its elastomer unit in the Saint Fons plant in 2016, under the support of the Chinese group Bluestar. This workshop allows itself to increase the production capacity by 50% and better serves value-added markets such as medical service, food and beverages, aerospace, etc. Furthermore, many high-end technologies applied to the workshop have created more superior working conditions for employees.
3. Bluestar Silicones is part of Elkem Group
In June 2015, Bluestar Silicones International was acquired by Elkem. Elkem is one of the world's leading companies for environmentally friendly production of materials. The company has four business areas; Silicon Materials, Silicones (Bluestar Silicones International), Foundry Products and Carbon. The main products are silicon, silicones, ferrosilicon, foundry alloys, carbon materials and microsilica. Elkem is headquartered in Oslo, Norway with a presence in over 40 countries worldwide. 4. From Bluestar Silicones to Elkem Silicones
The year 2017 has been an exceptional year for Bluestar Silicones and you can discover all along more about our people and our silicones. On June 29th, 2017 a new chapter for us opens up Bluestar Silicones becomes Elkem Silicones. This is when Elkem announces the integration of two Chinese entities into the Elkem group, as well as the renaming of Bluestar Silicones to Elkem Silicones. As part of Elkem's growth strategy, we are assuming responsibility for Bluestar Xinghuo Silicones and Yongdeng Silicon Materials and integrating them into the Elkem group. This move further develops Elkem's integrated silicon value chain, from upstream quartz mining to silicon, silicones and downstream silicone specialties. At the same time as Elkem assumes responsibility for the two new entities, Elkem's silicones division is changing its name from Bluestar Silicones to Elkem Silicones. Being part of Elkem gives a strong financial foundation for further growth, enabling Elkem Silicones to remain a competitive and agile provider of innovative silicone solutions. The new Elkem Silicones (formally Bluestar Silicones) division will group together about 3200 employees for an annual turnover approaching 1 Billion Euros. The division will operate with a strong base comprising 2 upstream manufacturing sites, one located in Asia and one located in Europe, along with 8 downstream manufacturing sites and 10 R&D centres worldwide.
