Silicones plant in Joinville give an important step to reduce its environment impact in community
Sustainability is very important for Elkem, and drive our work continuously to maximize our positive impact on the environment and societies, as well as to minimize any negative impact.
We always look for new and innovative ways to reduce waste and emissions, and to get more out of our raw materials. With this in mind, the Silicones plant, based in Joinville (Santa Catarina/ Brazil) recently implemented a rainwater reuse process. This is a sustainable solution for the environment, which also helps with company´s productivity.
As it rains a lot in Joinville, and the water, combined with industrial waste, generates costs to discard. After some studies and analyses, a team spirit group implemented a rainwater filtering system, which in turn, is used in the cooling tower.
The results were encouraging: the rainwater could be used to cool equipment, with the ability to reuse more than a million liters of water per year. The group still has new ideas and plans to turn the cost of clean water to zero and reduce 80% the water treatment expenses. Continuous improvement is one of the essences of Elkem´s corporate culture, definitely the group will work to find new solutions to maximise the positive impact on our operations.
