Combining durability with comfort in Prosthetics and Orthotics

Manufacturers of prosthetics devices, such as artificial limbs, use silicones for their mechanical properties and for the comfort they provide for end users. Prosthetics devices made with silicones are lightweight and feature outstanding feel and appearance features.

Related components, such as liners and pressure-relief cushions, provide users with precise fit and exceptional freedom of movement and prevent friction-related injuries and discomfort.

For these prosthetic liners, for example, silicones are used to create soft and flexible materials that can be shaped over the patient's residual limb for protection against contact with a prosthetic device. Silicone liners reduce swelling, avoid skin abrasions and lessen the pain that amputees often experience. This provides users with the flexibility they need to undertake a wide range of tasks, including precise movements.

The key challenge in developing these devices is to select materials with two properties that are often incompatible: low durometer levels and optimal mechanical properties. Customized silicones can overcome this tradeoff by providing formulations to make versatile devices that are easy to fit, comfortable and durable. These same performance and comfort features are achieved in orthotics, such as braces for spinal or orthopedic support and pediatric care products.

The Elkem Silicones Silbione® range of ingredients and formulations designed for prosthetics and orthotics manufacturing are easy to process and cost effective for manufacturers and provide dependable and safe materials for patients. Our teams are dedicated to working closely with manufacturers, often in long-term partnerships, to provide them with the right products and personalized services.

Our R&D teams are working on current and future needs by developing new products that meet evolving market demand. Our customers are in constant contact with these R&D specialists, as well as qualified technicians and responsive sales and logistics professionals.
